Protect Your Home - Fire Season Safety

Matt Rogers - Wednesday, July 28, 2021

Fire season is upon us and this summer there are many things you can do to be proactive in protecting your home from wildfire. Colorado has a history of wildfires and this year we have already seen the destruction of over 27,912 Colorado acres as of July 4th. Here are some ways you can protect your home from wildfires this season.

Clear branches and debris from around your home. This includes low or dry branches on trees and any dry leaves, lawn clippings, or pine needles. It is important to maintain this regularly, especially close to the home. Some fire departments offer a free assessment of your property for mitigation purposes so it may be worth a call to them to see if they can provide further tips.

Keep charcoal grills off decks and don’t store your firewood under your deck or close to the home, especially under overhangs for porches. To keep a safe distance, store your firewood further away from the home. The recommended firewood storage distance is 30 feet from any structure.

Keep your roof and decking cleared of debris. This includes fallen branches, pine needles, and leaves, or any branches that overhang the house or decking. Also, gutter cleaning is always recommended to be regularly performed. At All Seasons, LLC CRMC we have a preventative maintenance program, where homeowners can opt-in for annual gutter cleaning and more.  If you rent or have a rental with us, please know we are doing our best to protect our rentals and ensure regular maintenance for the safety of your home and investment.

Another way you can protect your home is to make sure that there is easy access to the home so that in the case of an emergency there is a clear space that is large enough to fit first responder vehicles. This would be by keeping large obstructions out of your driveways such as broken vehicles or storage containers.

With all of these precautions, there is still no guarantee of the safety of your home in the case of a wildfire. However, being proactive and keeping your yard, driveway, and roof cleared can help first responders have more time and less flame to put out. We hope these tips are useful in protecting your home in the case of an emergency. You can stay up to date with wildfires in your area here with this wildfire tracker. Stay safe!
